A sill and connector assembly for a railcar end structure associated with a railcar truck having a capacity of at least approximately 100 tons. The assembly comprises a centre sill and a railcar connector. The sill is provided in the railcar end structure and comprises spaced apart upper and lower members and spaced apart side members. The upper and lower members are joined to the side members to form a receptacle. The upper member of the centre sill is substantially coplanar with a structural member of the railcar end structure which is connected to opposed side walls of the railcar. The upper, lower and side members of the centre sill define an outer peripheral engagement edge at an outboard end of the sill. The railcar connector has an outboard end portion and an inboard end portion. The outboard end portion provides a coupling for articulated connection to a corresponding connector of another railcar. The inboard end portion is received in the receptacle of the centre sill and defines a peripheral abutment surface for engagement and welded attachment of the railcar connector to the outer peripheral engagement edge of the sill. The peripheral abutment surface of the inboard end portion of the connector is brought into circumferential contact with the outer peripheral engagement edge of the sill when the inboard end portion is received in the receptacle means of the centre sill. The peripheral abutment surface and the outer peripheral engagement edge together form a continuous circumferential channel for a welded connection between the railcar connector and the sill.
