CENTRIFUGAL ACTUATOR FOR A.C. INDUCTION MOTOR Abstract A centrifugal actuator for activating a sta- tionary switch in a single phase induction motor which has a hub with a central opening inside a central body portion for assembly and securement on the shaft of a motor for rotation thereby. The hub has a flat outer member for contacting the switch to actuate starting windings of the motor when the motor is in a rest con- dition and is removed from the switch under centrifugal action by weights located inside the actuator to cut out the starting windings when the motor is in a run con- dition. The central body portion of the hub which extends toward the motor over the motor shaft and receives a base of magnetic material which has side members also of magnetic material connected thereto which with the base provides an envelope enclosing the weights and other internal parts of the actuator located inside the centrifugal actuator. This prevents the flow of magnetic flux from the windings of the motor to the enclosed parts of the actuator. The weights are secured to hinges in turn secured to the side members and the weights pivot free of the base when the actuator is moving from a rest to a run position around knife edges or abutments pro- vided on the body of the hub. Objectionable rattling during coastdown is prevented by preloaded tabs formed integrally with the base which are lodged in preloaded recesses in the body of the hub and the preload of the tabs must be overcome before the hub will rattle on the motor shaft. The preloading of the tabs and recesses is provided by springs which extend diametrically across both sides of the actuator.
