ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A liquid-liquid mixer is disclosed of the type including a vertically cylindrical vessel having a coaxial impeller with radial vanes whose diameter is about 50% to 90% of the inside diameter of the vessel. The impeller is opera- tively associated with recirculation chambers axially spaced from but adjacent to the impeller and having curved tangential- radial upright partitions for directing a portion of the mixture propelled by the impeller into an annular space between the outside of the impeller and the vessel, back towards the center of the respective chamber to reintroduce the mixture to the center of the impeller. The impeller and the recircula- tion chambers are coaxial and have generally the same diameter to define-said annular space. The volume of recirculated mix- ture can be controlled by selectively closing louvers provided in the recirculation chambers between adjacent partitions. A plurality of impeller-recirculation-chamber units can be arranged coaxially in series. Another disclosed embodiment operates with only one impeller and one recirculation chamber. The mixer provides an increased volumetric efficiency and reduces the drive energy requirements.
