A centrifuge has a rotatable bowl (56) generating a cylindrical slurry pool (70) and at least one liquid phase discharge port assembly (64) provided on the bowl. Each of one or more liquid phase discharge port assemblies (64) on a bowl head (62) define a liquid phase discharge path having a circumferential component oriented in opposition to a direction of rotation of the bowl. Each discharge port assembly (64) includes a tubular member (66) having at least one or two elbow pipe sections.
