The surface of a body of low density ceramic fibre material has a ceramic glaze applied thereto. Before application of the glaze, the surface is consolidated, e.g. by vacuum-forming and/or by the application of a coating of a colloidal silicate binder, which may also partially permeate the ceramic body. After application ofthe glaze, the body is fired.
