In a consumable-electrode MIG welding torch, an insulative ceramic insert is secured into a metal support-component. The insert allow the electrical stick-out of the welding-wire to be large, while the mechanical stick-out is small. The support component may be the replaceable copper tip-piece of the torch, or the gas-shroud. The ceramic insert is secured by crimping a skirt of the metal support-component inwards onto a tapered conical surface.
