An improved metal working tool or die (30) having an outer surface formed from synthetic resin material that is filled with a hardener. The outer surface is formed of a material that consists of a synthetic resin mixed with tabular alumina and a surface treating agent such as gamma- Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The tool or die (30) is formed over a pattern (10) by applying the outer hard surface layer (14) to the pattern (10) and then a second or intermediate layer (8) of synthetic resin that is filled with calcium silicate. A third layer (16) of material that includes a reinforcing fiber such as fiber glass is applied over the intermediate layer (8).
