Production of a layered ceramic product comprises positioning a first layer of a sinterable particulate ceramic material in face to face contact with a second layer of sinterable particulate ceramic material, sintering the particulate ceramic material and prior to effceting face to face contact, treating at least one of the surfaces to be positioned in face to face contact such that a zone of weakness is provided between the first and second layers of sinterable material. The zone of weakness in the ceramic product acts to deflect a crack propagating across the layers of sintered material along the zone of weakness thereby increasing the work required to break the product. The layered ceramic product may also have an improved fracture toughness when a crack deflected along a zone of weakness does not propagate across an adjacent layer of sintered material from the tip of the crack in the zone of weakness.
