.alpha.-Galactosylceramides and glycosylceramides ("ceramide-like glycolipids") that modulate NK T cells. The ceramide-like glycolipids vary in the cytokines induced in NK T cells and vary in the antigen-presenting cells that are capable of efficiently presenting the compounds to NK T cells. Pharmaceutical compositions of the ceramide-like glycolipids are provided, as are pharmaceutical compositions of the ceramide-like glycolipids combined with dendritic cells. Methods utilizing the ceramide-like glycolipids in vaccines, to activate NK T cells, to stimulate the immune system, and to treat mammals are also provided. The invention also provides methods of evaluating a compound for its ability to activate an NK T cell in the presence of a cell expressing a CD 1 d protein.
La présente invention concerne des a-Galactosylceramides et des glycosylceramides ("glycolipides de type céramides") qui modulent des lymphocytes T NK. Les glycolipides de type céramide se modifient dans les cytokines induites dans les lymphocytes T et se modifient dans des cellules présentant un antigène qui sont capables de présenter efficacement ces composés aux lymphocytes T NK. La présente invention concerne aussi des compositions pharmaceutique de ces glycolipides de type céramide, ainsi que des compositions pharmaceutique de ces glycolipides de type céramide combinées avec des cellules dendritiques. Cette invention concerne aussi des techniques utilisant ces glycolipides de type céramide dans des vaccins, permettant d'activité des lymphocytes T. NK, afin de stimuler le système immunitaire et de traiter des mammifères. Cette invention concerne enfin des techniques d'évaluation d'un composé concernant sa capacité à activer un lymphocyte T NK en présence d'une cellule exprimant une protéine d CD1.
