La présente invention a pour objet un oxyde cérique à nouvelles caractéristiques morphologiques dont notamment une surface spécifique d'au moins 15 m2/g, mesurée après calcination à une température comprise entre 800 et 900°C. L'invention vise également un des procédés d'obtention dudit oxyde. Le procédé de l'invention est caractérisé par le fait que l'on soumet un hydroxyde cérique préparé par précipitation basique à partir d'une solution d'un sel de cérium, à un traitement solvothermal avant l'opération de calcination.
