A cerium oxide with pores having a uniform lamellar structure. The pores may be at least partially arranged in substantially parallel directions and may also extend throughout the grain. The method for preparing said cerium oxide comprises heat treating a compound that essentially consists of cerium carbonate octahydrate. The atmosphere in which the treatment is performed includes an air/steam or oxygen/steam mixture with a steam volume fraction of at least 40 %. Said cerium oxide is particularly useful as a catalyst, especially in motor vehicle post-combustion catalysis.

L'invention concerne un oxyde de cérium caractérisé en ce qu'il présente des pores de structure lamellaire et homogène. Ces pores peuvent être au moins en partie orientés sensiblement parallèlement les uns aux autres et aussi s'étendre dans toute l'épaisseur du grain. Le procédé de préparation de l'oxyde de cérium de l'invention est caractérisé en ce qu'on traite thermiquement un composé constitué essentiellement par un carbonate de cérium octahydraté. L'atmosphère dans laquelle se déroule le traitement comprend un mélange air/vapeur d'eau ou oxygène/vapeur d'eau avec une fraction volumique en vapeur d'eau d'au moins 40 %. L'oxyde de cérium de l'invention peut être utilisé notamment comme catalyseur, en particulier dans la catalyse de post combustion automobile.
