ABSTRACT In the procedure of inserting inserts into books, a device whereby opposing belts propel an insert into the book, while the cover is being folded, is commonly used. In this invention, a machine has been developed to partially open an adhesively bound book with open or closed head signatures while moving along a conveyor belt thus permitting an insert unit to effectively carry out the insertion procedure. The main features of this apparatus are a nipping belt, a knife, and a knife extension. The function fo the nipping belt is to apply constant pressure on a book allowing the knife to plough through it without affecting the quality of the product. The knife extention opens the book further as it moves along the conveyor belt allowing efficient insertion. The book then travels past the range extension and closes. To handle books with closed head signatures, a sharper teflon coated blade is used. An adjustment rod enables the machine to adjust to books of various sizes. The height of the knife can be adjusted for insertion in various areas within the book. The invention substantially reduces the labor requirement to operate an insert program and resolves the common problem of insert adhesion.
