ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A chain conveyor comprising, a casing, and a pair of laterally spaced chains between which scrapers are mounted for moving loose material, particularly ash, through the casing. The chains pass around guide pulleys, and ash falling into the casing is moved by the scrapers across an intermediate base for discharge at one end of the casing. The direction of the chain movement is generally horizontal in one region and inclined vertically in another, and, especially in the transition zone, ash tends to become compacted near the diverting rollers between the two zones. A shaped component is placed on the upstream side of at least one of the rollers, mounted above the chain, and where the roller is profiled, the component also has a profile which engages in the roller profile. A surface may be provided on the component directed inwardly of the casing for engaging and moving ash in an inwards direction. A guide wedge may also be provided below the chain, upstream of the roller and with an inwardly directed surface for engaging ash adjacent the roller and moving it inwardly. A similar guide wedge may be mounted adjacent the chain drive wheel in the casing beneath the chain where it passes onto the drive wheel. A hold down device for the chain. adjacent the drive wheel, for preventing chain throw-off on undue loading is also described. -1-
