The invention relates to a device for a chain saw for tensioning the chain and for tightening the guide bar. It includes a bar puller having a force developing surface, which is inclined relative to a plane which is perpendicular to the flat sides of the bar and to the longitudinal direction of the bar; a recess or hole in the bar, the hole or recess having a pull edge on the front side of the recess or hole, i.e. the side which is facing the tip of the bar, the pull edge being designed to be able to co-operate with the force developing surface of thebar puller, and that the bar puller, when the chain shall be tensioned, is provided under the influence of an applied force to be pulled in a direction substantially perpendicular to the flat side of the bar, so that the inclined force developing surface under wedge action is pressed against the pull edge, wherein the bar through the wedge action is pulled forwards tensioning the chain.
