ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In a device for tensioning a chain comprising a frame, a ratchet wheel mounted to said frame on a ratchet wheel shaft, the ratchet wheel adapted for turning by means of an operating lever and a push pawl fastened to the lever, a chain wheel mounted on said ratchet wheel shaft with said ratchet wheel and turnable together with said ratchet wheel, and a locking pawl having a component for engaging said ratchet wheel teeth, by means of which backwards movement of the ratchet wheel can be prevented, the improvement comprising a traverse fastening shaft of the operating lever passing through the operating lever and the frame at a longitudinal distance from the ratchet wheel shaft; an instant-release lock fastened to the frame at a fastening end of the device, the lock receiving a link of a fastening chain; the instant-release lock including a locking loop mounted to the frame on a locking loop shaft and a locking pin mounted to the frame on a locking pin shaft, whereby an outer end of the locking pin can be arranged inside the locking loop; and the locking pawl being mounted on a locking pawl shaft at an opposite end of the frame from the fastening end of the device, the locking pawl shaft being located in the direction of rotation of said ratchet wheel with respect to said component of the locking pawl.
