A chair has a seat (1) and a backrest (2), and the backrest (2) is tiltable backward by elastic deformation of left and right back frame devices (4). The back frame devices (4) are constructed from two unit frames (43, 44). The back frame devices (4) have main sections (4a) arranged on the outer sides of the left and right of the seat (1); upward inner sections (43a, 44a) connected to the rear ends on the upper parts of the main sections (4a); downward inner sections (43b, 44b) entering under the seat (1) from the rear sections at the lower ends of the main sections (4a); and forward facing end sections (43c, 44c) integrally connected to thedownward inner sections (43b, 44b). The forward facing end sections (43c, 44c) are fixed to a base (7). The three factors of the back frame devices (4) being long in length, having the downward inner sections (43b, 44b), and having forward facing end sections (43c, 44c) enable the back frame devices to elastically deform largely. As a result, the backrest (2) can be tilted backward with a large angle.
