ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE : The present invention relates to a chair with a seat which is supported on an upright tube located essentially below its centre point, and with a backrest which is connected to the seat by means of a support arm pivotable relative to the seat about a horizontal axis located below the seat in front of the upright tube, the support arm having a fork which joins its lower end and extends on both sides of the upright tube towards said axis, and a compression spring counteracting the tilting motion of the backrest so as to bias it back into a substantially vertical position, in which chair said fork of the support arm has parallel prongs that are angle-shaped, each prong forming two arms one of which extends in a generally downwards direction from the hori- zontal pivot axis so as to support, at its point of intersec- tion with the other arm, the end of an axis parallel to the horizontal pivot axis of the fork and serving as a first hinge point of the compression spring whose other hinge point is located near the front edge of the seat, said axis being at such a distance below the pivot axis that the compression spring is substantially at right angles to the downwardly extending arm of each prong of the fork.
