ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A chair has a height adjustable back rest, a back rest support and an adjusting member which supports the back rest. The adjusting member is guided on the back rest support and is movable relative thereto. A detent mechanism, which can be released against the effect of compression spring, is pro- vided between the back rest support and the adjusting member. An activating member of the detent mechanism is pivotably mount- ed relative to the adjusting member by a mounting bar and is connected with a detent member which cooperates with one detent hole of several detent holes provided in the back rest support. In order to be able to arrange the activating location within wide limits at any desired distance from the detent location with the use of simple parts, the mounting bar is arranged with its axis horizontal. At least one of its upwardly bent ends is formed as an activating arm of the activating member.
