ABSTRACT In a channel access process for a local transmission system configured as a bus system for packetwise transmission of messages without central control, each station willing to transmit monitors the transmission channel and transmits its message in function of the state of the transmission channel. Should a collision occur between messages in the transmission channel, transmission of the messages is interrupted and a collision resolution is carried out in a resolution phase. The packets are transmitted in a sequence corresponding to the increasing residual length or residual output time. The resolution phase which begins at the end of a collision consists of possibly several time-segments in each of which the transmission for the packets of messages of predetermined length or residual output time is released.
