STC-142 Abstract of the Disclosure A channel adapter is disclosed which serves to inter- face between a host computer and a virtual storage system of the type in which data is stored in locations chosen by intelligence in the virtual storage system and in blocks of a size chosen for convenience for the memory system. The channel adapter comprises first relatively intelligent processor means for controlling the flow of data and second relatively high speed sequencer means slaved to the first processor for actual handling of the host interface and third hardware logic for actual handling of the data. Means for data compression and decompression are provided in the data flow path prior to division of the data into block sizes convenient for storage on the long term storage media.
