An automatic channel sampler system, including a television signal tuner (100), displays an array of inset pictures on a display screen when the video signal being processed by the receiver no longer comprises a video signal exhibiting program information (i.e., either no valid video signal at all, or a video signal for displaying a uniform black or uniformly colored screen). Each inset picture is a still video picture (i.e, freeze- frame) selected by tuning each of the channels in a scan list of channels. In one VCR embodiment, automatic channel sampling is initiated in response to the detection of the end of recorded video signals from a tape, or in response to a signal generated by an end of tape sensor (370).
