Subject : CHANNEL SELECTION SYSTEM FOR A DISPLACED SPECTRUM FREQUENCY SYNTHESIZER. Abstract of the Disclosure A comparator-discriminator is provided, suitable for use with a phaselock control system of a frequency synthesizer, to permit automatic tuning of a variable oscillator to a selected frequency lying within a frequency band for which a phaselock may occur. This system permits the frequency of the variable oscillator to lock-on an arbitrary value in the range other than the preselected value, at which time the phaselock is bro- ken by an injected signal, thereby permitting the shifting of the oscillator frequency to another value lying closer to the selected frequency value. Upon achievement of phaselock to the selected frequency, in a slightly more elaborate embodiment, the injected signal is inhibited and no further breaking of phase- lock can occur. In operation of both the embodiments the compa- rator-discriminator provides a control signal in the sense of driving the variable oscillator towards the preselected fre- quency value, using a periodically actuated switch to connect the control signal to the oscillator control system. A further embodiment of the system relates to a synthesizer with spectrum shift interpolation. In two further embodiment of this system simplifications are made by which certain functions of channel selection and interpolation are combined. One of these embodiments empemploys a phaselock oscillator as the basic frequency source for the channel selection system while the second embodiment employs a system of mixing and filtering. The embodiments disclosed have the virtues of simplicity, low cost and enhanced reliability as well as a short channel selection time.
