ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A character reader recognizes characters by scanning them in lines corresponding to line marks, after detecting the line marks. The line marks are recorded corresponding to lines on a sheet where characters are recorded. Only a character detection signal related to a scanning signal within the do- main determined by the line mark is extracted from scanning signals of the recorded characters.
