- 47 - CHARACTER RECOGNITION METHODS INCLUDING SEPARATING AND EXTRACTING PARTICULAR PORTIONS FROM EXTRACTED DATA By Norbert Klenner ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A method for recognizing amount data characters contained on a document, such as the courtesy amount (10b) on a check (10). The courtesy amount (10b) typically comprises a dollar portion (10b-2) and a cents portion (10b-1). Recognition of the courtesy amount (10b) is accomplished by investigating an image of the document area containing the courtesy amount to derive a separation characteristic between dollar and cents portions, such as a period (Fig. 14, PC) or a fraction (Fig. 17). The separated cents portion is then categorized, and the cents characters derived based on the determined category, following which the characters of the dollar portion are recognized.
