CHARACTER SELECTION AND ESCAPEMENT SYSTEM FOR SERIAL IMPACT PRINTER Abstract A serial impact printer includes a frame mounted drive motor coupled to a print wheel to effect rotation thereof. The print wheel is mounted to a movable print carrier which serially moves from print position to print position along the print line. The motor is coupled to the wheel pulley of the print wheel through a belt which is wrapped about two idler pulleys located on a sub-carrier. The sub-carrier 61 moves one half the distance of the print carrier so that during escapement motion of the print carrier, the belt imparts no rotary motion to the wheel pulley and hence to the print wheel. The print carrier may be clamped to the belt to effect the return motion thereof. The motor is also coupled through a clutch to the line feed apparatus of the platen.
