ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A charging device for use in electrostatic copying machines to charge and discharge the photo-sensitive drum or transfer paper is disclosed which eliminates the adherence of toner powders to the charging wire. The performance of the charging device is improved and required maintenance is reduced. In conventional charging devices, toner powders tend to adhere to the charging wire during operation reducing the discharge performance. The toner powders may adhere to the transfer paper, or may re-adhere to the drum and maintenance is required. The charging device disclosed incorporates a piezoelectric vibratory element which applies a vibratory motion to the charging wire for a specified duration. Alternative embodiments utilizing magnetic means for vibrating the charging wire are also disclosed.
