Abstract of the Disclosure A check valve especially suited for use with a sand slurry. The check element comprises a frusto-conical surface which engages a sharp edged seat. The surfaces forming the seat intersect at an acute angle, preferably in the range of 30° to 60°. Contact between the sloped surface of the check element and the seat edge pushes sand particles aside and prevents them from interfering with the closing of the valve. A spring which urges the check element toward the seat is segregated from the slurry to prevent fouling of the spring. RH
