A method and apparatus for sealing the gap between adjacent boiler tubes of a panel wall thereby making the panel wall air-tight. First and second sealing members are secured to opposite sides of adjacent boiler tubes thereby defining a gap therebetween. This gap is then filled with a metal salt solution which is dried in place so as to leave a residue behind. Subsequently, this residue is further heated which converts it to a metal oxide that forms an air-tight ceramic plug. This plug possesses properties which make it resistant to deterioration once the panel wall goes into service.

Méthode et dispositif permettant de colmater l'espace entre des tubes adjacents de chaudière d'un panneau, ce qui le rend hermétique. Une première et une seconde pièces de colmatage sont placées des côtés opposés de tubes de chaudière voisins, définissant ainsi un espace entre eux. Cet espace est ensuite rempli d'une solution de sel métallique séchée sur place afin d'obtenir un résidu. Ce résidu est alors chauffé davantage pour le convertir en oxyde métallique qui forme un bouchon de céramique hermétique. Ce bouchon possède des caractéristiques qui le rendent résistant à la détérioration une fois que le panneau est remis en service.
