The preparation includes providing a first target recognition moiety comprising a nucleotide sequence of at least about 15 nucleotide bases, the sequence containing at least one 5' end and 3' end, chemically altering the first target recognition moiety to contain a reactive functionality at the 5' end, the 3' end, or both, and providing a second signal generating moiety, having at least one terminus containing a functionality that is capable of reacting with at least one reactive functionality provided on the first target recognition moiety, and chemically reacting the first target recognition moiety now containing reactive func- tionality, with the terminus of the second signal generating moiety, to chemically join these two moieties and produce the labeled nucleotide probe. This method provides an interesting alternative to the syntheses of labeled nucleic acid probes known to the art. It also provides diagnostic and research reagents containing the probes.
