CHEMICAL PREVENTION OR REVERSAL OF CATARACT BY PHASE SEPARATION INHIBITORS ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a method and reagents for decreasing the phase separation temperature and inhibiting the formation of high molecular weight aggregates in eye lenses to thereby prevent or reverse cataract formation. These reagents meet the following criteria: they are able to diffuse from an aqueous solution into the lens and exert an effect over a reasonable period of time; they are not toxic to the lens or surrounding tissue when delivered systemically or topically to the eye; and they do not substantially change the eye color or viscoelastic properties of the lens in a manner detrimental to visual acuity. In the preferred form, the reagents are applied locally (topically) or orally to minimize the effective dose and side effects.
