ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing 2-aminoimidazole derivatives of formula Image I and salts thereof, wherein R is selected from hydrogen, (C1-4) alkyl, (C1-2) alkoxy-(C1-4) alkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, biphenylyl and phenyl- (C1-4) alkyl, R1 may be hydrogen, (C1-4)alkyl or (C1-2) alkoxy-(C1-4) alkyl, which comprises catalytically hydrogenating a molar proportion of an .alpha.-aminonitrile of formula Image IV or an acid salt thereof, wherein R and R1 are as above defined, in the presence of a metal of the 8th group of the periodic table of elements adsorbed on a conventional carrier aa the hydrogenation catalyst, at a temperature ranging from about 0° C to about 100° C, at low pressure, in a water solution of a strong mineral acid, for from about 2 to about 24 hours, subsequently adding a molar excess of cyanamide over the compound of formula IV, and heating the resulting mixture at a temperature ranging from about 50 to about 100°C for from about 0.5 to about 1.5 hours. These compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of the related 2-nitroimidazole compounds, which are useful as antimicrobial agents.
