A process for the manufacturing of a construction material comprises three steps. In the first step an alkaline cellulose solution is prepared by adding lime to a suspension of cellulose fibers in water. After the lime has reacted with the fibers, a trivalent or monovalent metallic salt is added to the alkaline cellulose solution. The metallic salt reacts with the cellulose solution forming an aqueous paste. A hydraulic binder is then added to the paste. A construction material for use as a spreadable, mortarable coating or for the making of blocks and sheets comprises a mixture of a calcium lignocellulosulfoaluminate or a calcium lignocellulocarbonate and a hydraulic binder.
