ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Chemical reactions are carried out in apparatus which subjects the material to substantially even shear. The apparatus passes the material repeatedly at an angle through a shear zone formed within the bulk of the reactants by relative movement of parts defining surfaces between which the material passes. The shear zone is formed within the material by temporarily entraining material in close-ended cavities in the surfaces so that a velocity component of the material is altered by relative movement of the surfaces during entrainment. The process is of particular value for the manufacture of detergents.
