ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pilus vaccine effective in treating urinary tract infections in mammals comprises an immunoprotectively effective amount of amino acid sequence corresponding to at least one antigenic determinant of the Gal-Gal pilus protein. The amino acid sequence of the vaccine comprises a 163 amino peptide. The antigenic determinant may be selected from the amino acid sequence of E. coli HU849 Gal-Gal pilus protein at positions 15 to 70, or 79 to 110, or 111 to 125, or 133 to 163. A method for use of the vaccine is also disclosed.
