A chess-like game is provided to simplify the teaching and playing of basic chess. It includes a game board (30) having a lesser number of squares, for example, five vertical rows (31-35) and six horizontal rows (36-41). A reduced number of pieces are provided, with each opponent's set including one each of a KING, QUEEN, BISHOP, KNIGHT, ROOK and five PAWNS. The lesser number of pieces are setup on the smaller game board such that they still incorporate many of the basic interrelationships and strategic aspects of conventional chess while permitting a more rapid and simpler game.
