A coat hook or other general use hook assembly comprising a stationary wall plate which is secured to a wall or back board and a hook-like member pivotally connected horizontally to the lower extremity of the said back plate. When manual pressure is applied to the top extremity of the said hook-like member it latches to the said back plate by the coming together of a spring-like protruding portion of the said back plate engaging into a formed depression located at the top extremity of the said hook-like member, thereby forming the said hook assembly. I believe that my invention where ever used for its known usefulness will also be a ready apparatus for the prevention of accidental injury and or accidental death by strangulation.
