ABSTRACT A process for the manufacture of (2S,3S)-threo- stereoisomer of a compound of formula 1 and (2R,3R)-threo- stereoisomer of a compound of formula 2 is disclosed. Image 1 Image 2 In the above formulae X represents NO2, NH2, NHCOCH3, NHCOCF3, NHCO2CH3, NHCO2(CH3)3 or NHCHO and R1 and R represent an alkyl group. The process comprises acylating a racemic mixture of (2S,3S)-threo and (2R,3R)-threo steroisomers of the compound of formula 1 with an acylating agent, in an anhydrous organic solvent and in the presence of a lipase and separating stereoisomers of compounds of formulae 1 and 2 so obtained. The unacylated (2S,3S)-enantiomer is useful for the manufacture of (2S,3S)-cis- diltiazem.
