ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and an apparatus for the wet scrubbing of the flue gases from a fossil fuel fired plant comprise a dust collector for removing fly ash and dust from the flue gases. The dust free gas is supplied to a prescrubber having a scrubbing liquor return for spraying scrubbing slurry into the flue gases to produce a slurry in a sump of the prescrubber. Some of the slurry is returned to an input of the prescrubber while some of the slurry is supplied over a bleed line to a flue gas line. The slurry is sprayed into the flue gases in the flue gas line. The sprayed slurry is dried and precipitated as particles in the dust collector to remove concentrations of chloride containing products from the process. A main absorber is connected to the prescrubber for further scrubbing of the gases and a thickener is connected to the main absorber for thickening the slurry produced in the main absorber. The slurry is filtered to produce a filter cake. Best results are achieved by limiting the temperature drop in the flue gas line which is due to the spraying of slurry to about 20°F and by operating the prescrubber at a pH of 4.0 to 4.5 for avoiding the absorption of SO2 in the prescrubber while still producing effective HC1 scrubbing.
