ABSTRACT Method of reducing color in bleach plant extraction filtrates derived in the bleaching of pulp without giving rise to the formation of chloroform and other chlorinated by products comprising contacting a bleach plant extraction filtrate with chlorine dioxide or chlorine dioxide in admixture with small amounts of chlorine at a temperature of about 60 to about 200°F and a pH of about 3.0 to about 6.0, using as the total dose of chlorine dioxide or chlorine dioxide in admixture with chlorine, 0.15 to 0.30 ppm as active chlorine/SCU.
