ABSTRACT Impure chlorine vapor, typically from the lique- faction step of a chlorine plant, is purified by contacting the vapor with aqueous hydrochloric acid which takes up the chlorine vapor but not the usual gaseous impurities The absorbed chlorine is separated from the acid and recovered by heating and/or by pressure reduction and the acid can be reused, preferably by recycling to contact other portions of the impure chlorine vapor.
