ABSTRACT The specifaction describes an enzyme choline oxides having at least the following properties: (1) Substrate specificity: a specific activity for a com- pound of general formulas; Image wherein R1 is -CH2OH or -CHO group. (2) Optimum pH: pH 8 (Tris-HC1 buffer). (3) Isoelectric piont: 4.6 (electrophoresis using carrier type ampholyte). (4) Molecular weight: 84000 ? 2100 ¦gel filtration using SEPHADEX G-150 (trade mark)¦. (5) Enzyme action: catalyses the reaction [I] and/or [II]. Image [I] Image [II] There is also described a process for the producrion of choline oxidase. The process comprises culturing a choline oxidase, producing microorginism belonging to genus Arthobacter in a nutrient culture medium and isolating the choline oxidase from the medium thus cultured. The enzyme choline oxidase catalyses the above reaction [I] and [II] without need for any coenzyme.
