A circular chop saw having an easy to use safety guard comprises a table, a pivot member on the table and a saw assembly pivoted about a pivot axis with respect to said pivot member. The saw assembly, carrying a motor driven blade, has a parallelogram lever arrangement so that it can be plunged into a workpiece supported on the table. A lower guard covers a bottom portion of the blade and is pivotable relative to the assembly. An extension of the parallelogram lever abuts a flange on the lower guard to prevent the assembly from pivoting from its raised rest position until the lower guard is manually opened enough to rotate the flange out of abutment with the parallelogram lever. The flange has a cam surface thereon that is engaged by the parallelogram lever during subsequent pivoting of the saw assembly to further rotate and open the lower guard.
