1090-17 A CHOPPER ABSTRACT A chopper for cutting feed material in harvester- threshers has a tubular cutter shaft which rotates about a substantially horizontal axis, onto which knives are preferably pivotally mounted, which have cutting edges along their sides and preferably also across their ends. Stationary counterknives protrude into the circular cutter path, which are followed (in direction of shaft rotation) by a guide plate which is substantially concentric with and spaced from the circular cutter path, to which at a distance from the counterknives an inwardly pointing retaining member is attached. To improve the chopping effect, the retaining member consists of a first step comprising a shaped edge, and a second step which follows in the direction of cutter rotation, where the second step consists of a plurality of raised portions comprising spaced transverse strips. The guide plate can include a pivotable portion, whereby the height of the first-step can be adjusted.
