A chroman derivative represented by general formula (I) and a vitamin-E-like active substance containing the same as the active ingredient, wherein X represents H, -CH2OH-, -CHO, -COOH, -COOCH3, -CH=NOH, -CONH2, -COCH3, - CH(OH)CH3, Br or -CN; Y represents optionally protected hydroxy; and R represents alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl, provided R represents C16 or higher alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl when X represents hydrogen.
