ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention is concerned with the production of chroman derivatives (I) Image (I) where A-B is -CH2-CH2- (Ia), -CH=CH- (Ib), -CHOH-CH3-(Ic) or -CO-CH2- (Id), R1 is -CH2-O-R' or Image , where R' is C1-C4-alkyl or arylmethyl and R" and R"' are each C1-C4-alkyl, which can also be bonded to form a five-membered or six-membered cyclic acetal or, if A-B is -CH2-CH2-, R1 is -CH2OH (IIa) or -CHO (IIb), R2 is C1-C4-alkyl and R3 is H or a protective group, by reacting an acetyl-trimethylhydroquinone (IV) Image (IV) with a ketone R2 -CO-R1 (V) to give (Id), or hydrogenating (Id) under dehydrating conditions to give (Ia), or converting R1 in (Ia) to hydroxymethyl by hydrolysis to give (IIa), or to formyl by hydrogenolysis to give (IIb), or hydrogenating (Id) with a metal hydride or with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to give (Ic), or dehydrating (Ic) by the action of heat or catalytically by means of an acid to give (Ib), or hydrogen- ating (Ib) with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to give (Ia), compounds (Ia)-(Id), (IIa) and (IIb) being useful as valuable intermediates for the synthesis of .alpha.- tocopherol (vitamin E) and its derivatives.
