In the present invention, fast dynamic dispersion compensation on a per-packet basis is performed by using a header recognition scheme at each node in an optical network to extract from each packet the path and bit-rate information. A decision can then be taken on whether dispersion compensation is needed for that packet, and if so, what would be a suitable amount of such compensation.

L'invention consiste à effectuer une compensation de dispersion dynamique rapide basée sur un paquet au moyen d'un processus de reconnaissance d'en-tête au niveau de chaque noeud d'un réseau optique afin d'extraire de chaque paquet l'information concernant la voie et le débit binaire. On peut ensuite prendre une décision concernant la nécessité d'une compensation de dispersion pour ce paquet et, si c'est le cas, le niveau adapté de cette compensation.
