A B S T R A C T In conventional chromatographic analysis the signals from the detector are utilized to draw a graph directly related to the strength of the detector signal and thus the graph requires inter- pretation by skilled personnel. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for processing the signal produced by the detector of a chromatographic analysis apparatus and wherein the detector signal is monitored over a fixed period of time, so spaced from a "start" time datum as to include the approach to and fall from maximum concentration of one gaseous con- stituent flowing through the detector, the signal strength indicative of the maximum concentration of the constituent within said time period is detected and stored in an afferent index memory and said stored maximum value signal is utilized to supply a value directly representative of the proportion of the constituent attaining maximum value within said time period.
