A curable emulsion coating composition essentially free of chromium is provided. The composition comprises a discontinuous phase comprising at least one water-insoluble, particulate film-forming thermoplastic resin, at least one water-insoluble, film-forming thermosetting resin, and at least one water- insoluble alkali metal salt of a heavy metal-containing acid. The heavy metal may be selected from titanium, zirconium, and mixtures thereof. The composition is suitable for use over a variety of metal substrates as a pretreatment coating or as a direct-to-metal primer.Also provided is a process for coating a metal substrate by contacting the substrate with the curable composition described above and heating the coated substrate to a peak metal temperature of 170 to 350 ~F (77 to 177 ~C). The coated metal substrate has a cured coating weight of 250-400 mg/ft2.
L'invention porte sur une composition sous forme d'émulsion durcissable essentiellement exempte de chrome, et comprenant: une phase discontinue consistant en au moins une résine thermodurcissable hydroinsoluble formant un film de particules; au moins une résine filmogène thermodurcissable hydroinsoluble; et au moins un sel hydroinsoluble de métal alcalin d'un acide contenant un métal lourd. Le métal lourd peut être du titane, du zirconium, ou leur mélange. La composition peut s'utiliser sur une variété de substrats métalliques comme revêtement de prétraitement ou comme apprêt posé directement sur le métal. L'invention porte également sur un procédé de revêtement d'un substrat métallique consistant à mettre en contact le substrat avec la composition durcissable ci-dessus, et à le porter à une température de pointe de 170 à 350 ·F (77 à 177 ·C). Le revêtement du substrat de métal revêtu présente, une fois durci, un poids de 250-400 mg/ft?2¿.
