A cigarette filter that includes a multiple section filter which reduces the level of predetermined smoke constituents. The filter (130) consists of a fibrous filter plug (132) located at the mouth-end of the cigarette, a section (136) containing a selective adsorbent material, and a section (134) containing a general adsorbent material. The selective adsorbent material, such as a phenol-formaldehyde resin matrix surface- functionalized with mainly primary and secondary amine functional groups, removes specific smoke constituents from the tobacco smoke. The general adsorbent material, such as activated charcoal, is preferably capable of adsorbing a range of chemical compounds without a high degree of specificity. Structurally, the fibrous filter plug, the selective adsorbent section, and the general adsorbent section are axially aligned in tandem.

La présente invention concerne un filtre de cigarette comportant une portion de filtre multiple qui réduit le niveau de constituants de fumée prédéterminés. Le filtre (130) est constitué d'un tampon de filtre fibreux (132) situé à l'extrémité bouche de la cigarette, une portion (136) renfermant un matériau d'absorption sélective, et une portion (134) renfermant un matériau d'absorption générale. Le matériau d'absorption sélective, tel qu'une matrice de résine phénolique formaldéhyde à surface fonctionnalisée avec essentiellement des groupes fonctionnels d'amines primaires et secondaires, élimine des constituants déterminés de fumée à partir de la fumée de tabac. Le matériau d'absorption générale, tel que du charbon actif, est, de préférence apte à absorber une gamme de composés chimique sans un degré élevé de spécificité. Du point de vue structurel, le tampon de filtre fibreux, la portion d'absorption sélective, et la portion d'absorption générale sont en alignement coaxial en tandem.
