ABSTRACT: The invention relates to a cigarette which goes out rapidly or is self-extinguishing, whose tobacco is surrounded by a casing of cigarette paper comprising areas with lesser and greater air permeability in the form of patterned, preferably annular zones and which is charac- terized in that the cigarette paper with an initial air permeability of less than 15 P was set to an average total air permeability under 4 P by means of a single or multiple batonneing of the particular, patterned zones.
